This week we celebrate the lovely embroidered wearable arts , carried by Ayurvastram. Our collection includes hand embroidered silks, cottons and wool. So we have started the STAR OF THE WEEK program. We will pick one product from our lovely collection and look at it from all the possible ways to see what makes us move when we look at it!

And so we are very excited! We are having this lovely event: 7 Tricks with Scarves to Dress your Home!
It is the matching up of two businesses who found a lot in common to celebrate, and who found creative opportunity in working together. So when these two come together, of course, they would want to think creative, and Jen of Lift Your Spirits saw so much opportunity here. 7 Tricks with Scarves to Dress your Home!

We are excited to host the workshop of Jen Duchene of Lift Your Spirits Home Transformations. Jen, a designer and innovator, who surely thinks out of the box.

So Jen is going to demonstrate how we can use scarves, with all those textures and bright colors, as accents and table covers (we are guessing right now!), and so many more ways, in our own homes.

For this project, Ayurvastram and Lift Your Spirits are perfect partners. We are proud to have one of the loveliest collection of scarves, and who would be better suited to use them as interior decor items than the talented Jen Duchene.

The best thing that we admire about Jen is her capacity to see potential with what is already there. She does not demand expensive furnishings and upholstery. She believes in working with what is there, and just tweak the relationship of the things in a room with each other and with the room itself. The results are amazing and the look is stunning.

So coming down to the nitty gritties, the event is scheduled for April 23rd, 6:30pm-9:00pm.

It is Spring! Nature celebrates with sweet fresh air and vibrant colors. And Ayurvastram joins in and celebrates with some fresh beautiful and colorful cottons. Check out the lovely cotton scarves at our store on State street in Los Altos, and these cottons will be soon displayed on the webstore too. Dressing up in cottons can be a great way to have the right cover from the sun, and also keeping cool! A Point of View on Accessorizing

This is actually a part of the upcoming series on "Do you wear clothes, or do the clothes wear you!". However, I was feeling so strongly about this idea today, that I had to definitely write this down here.
This season, as the past few seasons, is the season of chunky accessories, specially chunky jewelry. One of the fashionable ways to dress up has been to wear monotone clothing and accessorize with chunky jewelry or a bright scarf. Concentrating on the chunky, there is a simple but important rule to this. Each of these pieces is gorgeous in itself. But the idea is that the whole outfit has to come together as a unit, and more importantly, the function of any piece of clothing is that it should fit YOU, it should fall in line with your personality and complement it. So the chunky piece of jewelry that is really pretty in itself, also has to fit in with your outfit to create a beautiful whole. One thumb rule when doing chunky is to not to overdo it. So generally, just do one gorgeous piece. You may choose just a gorgeous big necklace on a monotone dress, or a couple of complementary necklaces together. In this case, keep the other accessories really toned down, smaller and tinier. So that ways, the chances of any set of clothing or accessories wearing you rather than the other way round are really cut down. Similarly, if you are doing a huge and beautiful chandelier earring set, you may choose to not do a necklace altogether. That ways, you create a beautiful focal point, a theme to the dress, and not make the whole thing too busy. And some how when you keep things a bit pared down, it is more sexy! It is also more controlled, so the message is that you are in control! And so you will feel grreat, and that would exude through your eyes and your smile. And then you are ready to go out into the world, and proclaim your victory!

Jewelry by Marcia de Calisto, at Ayurvastram

She is a cute woman from Chile, and an artist for life. While art may not be earning her bread and butter, it definitely feeds her soul, and that is what reflects in her eclectic and beautiful designs. Marcia's designs are out of ordinary in all the sense of the word, and her flare for bringing two very unrelated things together, and finding relationships where none seemed to exist are the reason for her gorgeous and deeply interesting creations.

Marcia's creations find a great niche among the Ayurvastram collections and fit in so delighfully. While they give a new viewpoint to the Ayurvastram theme, they also seem to become a part of and seem to grow from that theme. It is an interesting relationship, to say the least.

When Marcia picks up a glass bead from Italy and the terracota beads from Brazil, and puts them together, they become her own, and a new design comes to life. Each of her pieces look a lot different from the other, and one wouldn't really know that they came from the same artist, unless and until one fugures out the underlying patterns and meanings that drive her designs.

Arts, Crafts, and Living Green

Each culture has their own traditional garments, items, etc. What even further distinguishes each culture is the textiles and the rich tradition involved in creating each piece. Ayurvastram Indian Silks: Types

India, being the world's second largest producer and supplier of silk has an old, almost traditional, silk industry with its history going way way back in time. Being the "Queen of Textiles", silk has always been an exquisite piece of clothing, that once it has been a tool to mark social classes, being affordable only for the upper classes, worn as a royalty symbol during functions and festivals in the Indian society.

Silk has four different types, as according to what the silkworm feeds on. These four types are mulberry, tassar, eri, and muga.

Mulberry

This type is the most widely produced so it comprises most of the silk out in the market today. The name came from the plant which the Bombyx mori silkworms that produce this type of silk solely feed on. Bombyx mori silkworms are grown indoors and are highly domesticated.

Tassar

Tassar silk is produced by Antheraea mylitta silkworms that feed on Asan and Arjun food plants. These silks are usually used for interiors and furnishings rather than clothes as they are also less shiny than the mulberry silk. Also, unlike mulberry, the silkworms are reared outdoors, mainly on trees.

A finer variety of tassar silk is now being produced by Antheraea proyeli silkworms that feed on oak trees, giving the name to the silks as oak tassar.

Eri

Known also as Errandi or Endi, this type of silk is spun from open-ended cocoons, making it unique from the other types. It is produced by another domesticated silkworm, the Philosamia ricini, which mainly eats castor leaves. However, eri silks are mainly more personal uses of the tribes that produced it.

Muga

Muga silks are naturally golden yellow in color. They are produced by Antheraea assamensis silkworms, which are semi-domesticated that eat Som and Soalu plants' leaves. Also, these silks are highly valuable as they are an important part of the Assam state's traditions and culture.
